Yaakov Henkin MD is a Professor of Cardiology and until recently the Head of the Preventive Cardiology Service at the Soroka University Medical Center (SUMC) and Vice-Dean for education at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ben-Gurion University in Beer-Sheva.
Prof. Henkin studied medicine at BGU and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the SUMC.
This was followed by a 2-year fellowship program in General and Preventive Medicine (with a specific emphasis on lipids and preventive cardiology) at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, USA. After 4 years as an attending physician in internal medicine at the SUMC, he completed a residency in cardiology.
Since 1997, Prof. Henkin has been a senior cardiologist at the SUMC, working in the echocardiography laboratory and in the general and preventive cardiology clinics.
In parallel, he continues to work as a primary care physician in a community clinic in the small residential area of Meitar, Israel.
He was one of the founders of the Medical School for International Health (MSIH) at BGU and served for 12 years, until 2010, as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (in collaboration with Columbia University in New York, New York, USA.
Finally, he served as the chairman of the Working Group for Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Preventive Cardiology of the Israeli Heart Society for 8 years.
